Wu Dai-hao returns and wins for ETSN

(Wu Dai-hao returned to ETSN after two years at BYU-Hawaii, photo courtesy of ESPN Taiwan)

Wu Dai-hao, who returned to Taiwan after a two-year career at BYU-Hawaii, had 12 points and 11 rebounds in his home debut and Huang Bao-tse hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 3.4 seconds remining as ETSN upset Taiwan Beer 85-83 Saturday.

TB led by as many as 12 as Lin Chih-jay scored 10 points in the third quarter, but ETSN didn't give up. Wu Dai-hao scored in the paint and tied the game at 79 all with less than two minutes to go before Yang Yu-min's three made the score 82-79, ETSN.

The Beermen seemed to take the game after Lo Shin-liang made another back-breaking three with 11.7 seconds left and made the score 83-82, TB. After a timeout, Huang Bao-tse knocked down the game-winner.

In another heavyweight matchup of the evening, Videoland overcame a ridiculous 1-of-8 performance at the free-throw line during the last minute and held on for a 96-93 win over Yulon, which lost two straight.

Lee Chi-yi's basket and free-throw help VL take a 95-91 lead with 31.7 seconds to go. As Yulon kept fouling to regain possessions, the Hunters managed to make only one out of 8 free-throw attempts. As ridiculous aas that, Yulon failed to pull ahead.

Chen Hsin-an tied his personal best with 11 three-pointers made in a single game and scored all his 33 points on threes. He was 11-of-22 from three and 0-of-3 from two-point range.

'Thank God it's Friday' for Azio, TB

(Azio F/C Chien Jia-hong goes up against Yulon center Tsun Wen-din, photo courtesy of ESPN Taiwan)

It's TGIF -- thank God it's Friday -- for Azio and Taiwan Beer, which came home with an inspiring win Friday night.

Led by forward/center Chien Jia-hong, who had 35 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists, Azio Eagles routed top-ranked Yulon 117-96 for its third win of the season.

Forward Lin Chih-jay had 17 of his game-high 31 points in the final quarter to go with 13 rebounds as Taiwan Beer beat Videoland Hunters for the first time this season with a 89-79 thriller.

Azio was on fire the whole game and had its best offensive output of the season, shooting 70% from two-point range and made 8 of 17 three-point tries. By this win, Azio will finish at least the same record as the last two years, when it went 3-27 in both seasons. Beating the defending champion will definitely boost their confidence with 10 games left in the season.

Lin Chih-jay exploded for 17 points in the final period and single-handedly turned a tight game into a 17-point lead. TB held off a late VL rally that cut the deficit down to 8 points and beat the Hunters for the first time in four meetings this season.

New foreign head coach for Taiwan NT

Local news outlets reported that CTBA has finally decided to go for a foreign head coach with this year's national team program. And a familiar name will be coming back to Taiwan.

Veteran Korean coach Chung Kwang-suk (also spelled as Cheng Kong Hee) will be hired as Taiwan NT's new head coach, replacing Lee Yun-kwangv, the unconfirmed news story reported.

It will not be the first time for Chung, who led Korea to the 1997 Asian Championship title and a 1998 World Championship berth, to be associated with the Taiwanese basketball program. He led a Taiwan Junior NT that included top players like Tsun Wen-din, Tien Lei, Lin Chih-jay, Wu Dai-hao and Ho Sho-jen to a third-place finish in the 2000 Asian Junior Championship.

Chung also briefly coached Dacin Tigers in the final season of the defunct CBA(Chinese Basketball Alliance) in 1998-99 and finished with a 8-14 record. Later he went back to Korea and coached the University of Korea.

In Korea or Taiwan, Chung has proved time and again that he is an excellent coach that brings out the best in his players. However I do believe Chung's hiring has to do with Wang Jen-da, current CTBA president and Dacin owner who is familiar with Chung.

(Yulon rallied to beat Dacin, photo courtesy of ESPN Taiwan)

Yulon overcame a 15-point second half deficit and upset Dacin 77-76 Sunday night, snapping Dacin's quest for its team-best six-game winning streak.

Yulon rallied to tie the game at 71 all before Chen Hsin-an scored a go-ahead basket with 53.2 seconds left to put Yulon on top, 77-76. Fllowing a timeout, Tien Lei missed a potential game-winning three as the ball bounced off the rim.

Wang Chih-chun made six 3-pointers in the second quarter as Dacin opened a 12-point halftime lead and expanded it to 15 early in the third quarter.

On Saturday, Tien Lei scored all but two of his 25 points in the second half and led Dacin to its fifth consecutive win after beating Taiwan Beer 90-86. Two teams combined for 31 3-pointers made in the game, a new SBL single-game record.

Wu Dai-hao leaving BYUH

Words from several local new outlets reported that Wu Dai-hao, who finished his sophomore season in Div-II BYU-Hawaii Friday after a loss in the NCAA Div-II Regional Tournament, will be coming back to Taiwan.

Rumor said 6-9, 260 pound Wu will leave BYUH, play for ETSN, his old team, for a year and join Taiwan Beer next season. It's believed that Taiwan Beer has been contacting Wu constantly during his sophomore season.

Does Wu come back to Taiwan for homesickness or just playing for money? There's no way to know so far. However, I think he should play for BYUH for at least one more year to hone his skill. In the long run it will benefit Wu that he receives as much instruction and coaching from U.S. basketball.

Wu played 36 minutes and had 9 point, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and two steals in BYUH's 71-68 loss to CSU-San Bernadino in Arcata, California, where the West Regional opening round of 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship was held.

If Wu is coming home, obviously he did not end his two-year U.S. college career on a high note, committing five turnovers and missed two of three free-throws in the last 1:32 of the game.

BYUH, which received an at-large bid as the 7th seed, finished the 2006-07 season 20-8.

Wu Dai-hao finished his sophomore season with the Seasiders averaging 10.6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.6 blocks per game, up from 8.9 points and 3.2 rebounds last season when he was named Freshman of the Year in the Pacific West Conference (PWC).

No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino battled back from a six-point deficit, rallying in the final six minutes to claim the win and advance to the semifinal against Seattle University.

Yulon point guard Lee Hsueh-lin is no more underrated and underappreciated. Lee was named SBL February MVP after leading the Dinos to a 5-1 month.

Wu Dai-hao, BYU-Hawaii looking at NCAA Div-II postseason berth

Wu Dai-hao, the first Taiwanese basketball attending 4-year college in the U.S. in recent years, is expected to play in the NCAA Division-II postseason, something he couldn't do last year as a freshman, with his BYU-Hawaii teammates.

The 6-9 forward finished his sophomore season with the Seasiders averaging 10.6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.6 blocks per game, up from 8.9 points and 3.2 rebounds last season when he was named Freshman of the Year in the Pacific West Conference (PWC).

Wu shot 48.9% from the field, 36.7% from three and 82.5% from the foul line. He was second on the team in scoring, behind Lucas Alves, a 6-9 freshman from Brazil. Wu also was named the PWC Player of the Week in the first week of the season.

And BYU-Hawaii, coached by Ken Wagner, finished the season 20-7, including 12-3 in the PWC. The seasiders were ranked 7th in the latest Div-II West Reginal poll. As the top eight teams in the final regional poll make the tournament, BYU-Hawaii should be going to the tourney this year.

Div-II regional tournament will be played from March 9-12, while the Div-II national tournament will be played from March 21-24.

Chang Chi-feng breaks SBL single-game three-pointers record

(Chang Chi-feng, photo courtesy of ESPN Taiwan)

Dacin guard Chang Chi-feng made 13 three-pointers en route to his career-high 43 points in a 97-96 win over Azio Friday and set the SBL single-game three-pointers record. Chang broke Chen Hsin-an's record of 11 threes in a game while also set the single-period three-pointer record with seven.

Chang had 21 points, the second highest SBL single-period score behind Yang Che-yi's 23 points, in the fourth quarter and single-handedly overcame Dacin's 11-point deficit for the win. His last three came at 29.6 seconds remaining to make the score 97-96.

Chang shot an eye-popping 13-of-20 from the three-point territory.

Tien Lei also exploded for 37 points and 12 rebounds for Dacin, which is now 8-7 and ranked 4th on the standing.

Inexperienced Azio let the win slip away once again. Chien Jia-hong led with 33 points while Zuo Tsun-kai scored season-high 19 points. Tsai Wen-cheng had 13 points while James Mao had 12.
