Four Asian teams to meet in ABA Three Goodness Championship

Four teams from Taiwan, Japan, China and South Korea will meet in the ABA Three Goodness Championship which begins today in the southern city of Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan.

The invitational tournament is co-organized by former FIBA Asia chairman Cheng Man-ky of Hong Kong and Taiwan’s Fo Guang Shan, a Buddhism organization. All the games will be played at I-Shou University Gymnasium.

Taiwan finishes sixth place in 2012 Asia Cup

Taiwan missed two jumpers in the last 15 seconds that could have tied the game and lost to China 67-63 in the classification round on Saturday, finishing for the sixth place in the 2012 Asia Cup tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Trailing 29-24 at the half and 49-47 at the end of the third quarter, Taiwan mounted the final comeback in the final period. Lee hsueh-lin’s three tied the game at 63-63 with 2:47 remaining before Zhao Tailong made a go-ahead jumper with 1:13 remaining.

Taiwan to meet China for fifth place

Taiwan beat Uzbekistan 86-70 in the classification round on Friday and set up a clash with China for the fifth place of the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup tournament at Tokyo, Japan.

China defeated Lebanon 78-63 in the other matchup. Uzbekistan and Lebanon will play off for the seventh place.

Chen Shih-chieh led Taiwan with 13 points and Lee Hsueh-lin had 12. Tseng Wen-ting, Tien Lei and Lu Cheng-ju scored 10 apiece.

Aleksandr Kozlov led Uzbekistan with  21 points.

Lin Yu-ting leads Taiwan U-18 women’s NT in Malaysia

With experiences at the U16 and U18 Asian championship as well as the U19 World Championship, 180cm versatile forward Lin Yu-ting will be Taiwan NT’s leader at the FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women at Johor Baru, Malaysia.

Lin will be one of the few players who was able to participate in two U18 Asia events because she made the NT roster at a very young age.

And her goal would be the same -- making the medal round and win an opportunity for a berth in the World Championship in Lithuania next year.

Taiwan lost to Philippines in Asia Cup quarterfinal

Taiwan lost to the Philippines 75-68 on Thursday in the quarterfinal game of the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup at Tokyo, Japan and will have to play in the classification round for 5-8 placings.

It is scheduled to meet Uzbekistan today.

Tien Lei made a tie-breaking alley-oop dunk with 1.4 seconds left as Taiwan beat Qatar 75-73 in its last preliminary game on Tuesday in the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

With 1.4 seconds left, Taiwan NT came out of a timeout and executed a near perfect set play by head coach Hsu Chin-tse for the surprising win.

Tien came off a backdoor screen by point guard Chen Shih-chieh, who missed both free-throws earlier and missed an opportunity to take a two-point lead, took off toward the basket and took an inbound pass from Lin Chih-chieh for the game-winning alley-oop dunk.

Taiwan lost to Iran but made Asia Cup quarterfinal

Taiwan lost to Iran 71-63 yesterday in Tokyo, Japan and fell to 1-2 in the preliminary round of the 2012 Asia Cup but clinched a quarterfinal berth after India finishing the round with four losses.

Four of the five teams in the Group A and B will make the quarterfinal, which mean Macau and India, each with a 0-4 record, will be eliminated.

Taiwan 1-1 after two games in Asia Cup

Taiwan NT beat India 113-88 on Sunday after suffering an opening setback against host Japan on Saturday and is now 1-1 after two games in the 2012 FIBA Asia Cup tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Jet Chang led Taiwan with 20 points, making four of five from the three-point range, in the India game. Tien Lei added 12 points.

Indian center Amritpal Singh paced his team with 22 points.

However, Taiwan head coach Hsu Chin-tse was not impressed with Taiwan’s defense, which was also why the team dropped its opening game 90-78 to Japan.

J.R. Henderson led Japan with 19 points and 10 rebounds as host Japan led from start to finish on Saturday for a revenge of a 25-point loss against Taiwan in the Jones Cup tournament.

Tien Lei led Taiwan with 19 points and seven boards and Tseng Wen-ting added 15 and 6.

Straits Cup tournament to be held in Taipei

The 2012 Straits Cup basketball tournament will take place from Oct. 12-14 in Taipei and the central city of Taichung with four teams from Taiwan and China competing in the annual cross-strait tourney.

Shanghai Dongfang Sharks, Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank of the Chinese pro league CBA will match up against a pair of home teams -- defending SBL champion Pure Youth Construction and Dacin Tigers, the runner-up last season -- in the three-day tourney.
