2010 Jones Cup Day 1: Lebanon rallies past Japan in final quarter

Jackson Vroman scored 11 of his 14 points in the 4th quarter to power Lebanon's 34-18 run in the final period for a 87-82 comeback win over Japan.
Yuta Tabuse, who was Vroman's teammate briefly in 2004 in the Phoenix Suns training camp, had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for Japan, which led by as many as 13 points. This is the first time for Tabuse to represent Japan in senior basketball competition.

2010 Jones Cup basketball tourney to begin
Four local teams are among 11 men's and women's basketball teams competing in the 2010 R. William Jones Cup International Invitational Basketball Tournament, Taiwan's top international hoop event, from July 14-20 in Taipei.
Taiwan is fielding a national team and a university all-star team in both the men's and women's competitions in the tournament, which will be played in Sinjhuang Stadium, Taipei County, with the aim of providing young players with more experience in international competitions.
Iran will be defending its title in the men's group, which will be played in a single round robin. Yuta Tabuse, a 173-cm point guard who appeared in four games with the Phoenix Suns of the U.S. National Basketball Association as the first Japanese player in the league, is regarded as one of the most high-profile players in the tournament.
The other men's teams are the Townsville Crocodiles of Australia's National Basketball League, the Lebanon national team and the Philippines national team.
In addition to the two host women's teams, the Shinsegae Coolcats of the Women's Korean Basketball League and the Kazakhstan national team will compete in the women's competition. The four teams will play a cross-over semifinal after a single round robin preliminary round.
The Taiwanese men's national team is scheduled to meet the Townsville Crocodiles in its opening game Wednesday, while the women's national team will meet the Kazakhstan national team Thursday.
The Jones Cup started in 1977 as an invitational tourney with national teams, club teams and university teams mainly from the Asian region. It was named after Renato William Jones, one of the founders and former secretary-general of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Taiwan NT 15-man roster for 2010 Jones Cup
CTBA announced a watered-down 15-man roster of Taiwan NT last week for the upcoming 2010 Jones Cup tournament with almost all the core Taiwanese players sitting out the tourney due to injuries.
Tien Lei, Lin Chih-chieh, Tseng Wen-ting, Wu Tai-hao and Chang Chih-feng will all skip the tournament so they can be in better condition for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, according to the CTBA.
Jet Chang, who is playing in the U.S. NCAA Div-II BYU-Hawaii, and Wu Chien-lung were added to the roster to boost up the lineup.
Led by head coach Zhang Xuelei, Taiwan NT started its training camp for the Jones Cup on July 5.
CTBA also said it will field a team for the Stankovic Cup, which will be held in Lebanon from Aug. 7-15, because the tourney will be a qualifying tournament for the Asian Championship next year. Top five teams will secure berths without going through regional qualifiers to qualify for the Asian Championship.

SURAT THANI, Thailand (20th FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women): A second quarter surge that caught their rivals completely unaware helped Chinese Taipei forge ahead for a 78-54 win over Korea in the third place play-off on Wednesday.
The bronze medal was Taipei’s first medal in eight years. Taipei had last won a medal when they bagged the silver in the 2002 edition of the Championship which they had hosted.
The third-place finish also booked Taipei’s ticket to Chile as the third FIBA Asia team to play in the 9th FIBA World U19 Championship for Women to be held in the South American country next year.
China and Japan, who play the gold medal had already qualified.
“We are thrilled to win the medal and represent FIBA Asia in the World Championship,” beamed Taipei coach Chen Mei-Li.
Korea, who had won a medal in all their 18 appearances so far – seven gold, five silver and six bronze – failed to finish on the podium for the first time in the Championship in more than three decades.
The last time Korea did not figure on the podium was in the 1980 edition at Bangkok, when they had not participated in the event.
“We were highly inconsistent,” lamented Korea coach Choul Kwon Choi.
Taipei had beaten Korea 84-82 in the Preliminary Round of the competition here and it certainly looked like Korea had learnt their lessons from that defeat, at least in the initial phases of the game.
Jihyun Lee, who was woefully off color in the previous defeat – she scored a mere five points in that game – was the leader of the early Korean charge.
Jihyun Lee opened the scoring for Korea, and followed it up a sizzling three-pointer. Gyuhee Kim added one of her own as Korea scored the first seven points of the game.
They maintained the edge on the scoreboard, but only until Taipei made their move early in the second quarter.
Lin Yu-Ting who scored 19 points in Taipei’s earlier win against Korea scored back-to-back to put Taipei level at 23-23 and Huang Hsiang-Ting followed her assist and gave Taipei the first lead of the game.
Taipei rolled on to a 12-0 spree which perched them in control of the proceedings.
Taipei went into the changing rooms 31-25 ahead and opened up a 13-point lead when Liu Jung-Hsing scored drove in the lane at about the midway mark of the third quarter.
Their control of the proceedings and the scoreboard only grew thereafter.
Lin Yu-Ting and Huang Hsiang-Ting shared the scoring honors for Taipei with Lee Ching-Ning with 15 points each.
Where Taipei flourished Korea who were outscored 6-18 in the second quarter withered.
Jihyun Lee who had scored 12 points in Korea’s initial flurry failed to add any later.
“We anticipated their early pace,” said Wang Wei-Chieh.
“Our defense was a little shaky at the start, but then it was understandable because of the pace of the game,” he added.
“We had to switch our defense, which we had planned for, and things fell in place for us,” he said.
“This medal is very crucial for Taipei basketball,” said Chen Mei-Li.
“Our preparations (for the World Championship) stars tomorrow. We are proud of what these girls have achieved here and we will ensure they keep the flag flying high.”
