March madness indeed

FJU beat NTNU for UBA title.

Taiwanese fans had a March Madness of its own. FJU upset NTNU in the national title game Wednesday in overtime, winning its first title in 12 years. Powerhouse TPEC not only saw its winning streak stopped at 155 games but also was denied of its 13th straight UBA title.

Hsing Wu College upset CCU in the quarterfinal and advanced to the final four for the first time. HWC lost two games in the semifinal and bronze medal game by large margins and finished fourth, but it was still a memorable cinderella run for the little-known school.

Chen Shun-hsiang had 32 points in the title game.

Here we take a look back at the final week of the 2007-08 UBA season:

March 26: Championship game

Chen Shun-hsiang made 8 of 10 from downtown en route to his game-high 32 points in a overtime 93-91 win over NTNU Wednesday in the UBA championship game, leading Fu Jen University to its sixth UBA title and the first in 12 years.

Guard Chou Tzu-hua had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in FJU's second upset win in as many night. FJU upset defending TPEC in the semifinal on Tuesday. FJU forward Wang Chien-wei had 13 points while Chen Ching-huan tallied 16 points and 7 boards.

NTNU, at the same time, couldn't get the monkey off its back. The hands-on favorite abruptly ended its 14-game winning streak and lost for the sixth time in the national championship game -- four times to TPEC and one time to CCU and FJU.

Chien Chia-hung had 28 points in the losing effort. Center Wu Tai-hao had 16 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Deng An-cheng had 27 points.

FJU will meet NTNU, which booked its sixth finals appearance after a 111-77 win over cinderella team HWC in the other semifinal matchup, in the championship game.

In the 5-8 classification games, CCU swingman Lin Ching-pang had his first career triple-double -- 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists -- in a victory over NTUA.

Veterans Lo, Chou retired

Chou Chun-san (left) and Lo Hsing-liang (Source: ESPN Taiwan)

Lo Hsing-liang, 37, and Chou Chun-san, 39, officially announced their retirement Sunday after playing in the same backcourt in their final game. Taiwan Beer retired Lo's number, No. 13, and Chou's No. 4 after the game.

The duo, arguably Taiwan's best backcourt in the last 20 years, first received nationwide popularity in the old CBA (Chinese Basketball Alliance) days from 1994-1999, when they played for Hung-kuo Elephants and led the team to an unprecedented three-peat along with Cheng Chih-lung. Cheng was regarded as one of the best small forwards in Asia.

The CBA folded in the middle of its fifth season in 1999. Hung-kuo was later taken over by a different owner and renamed to Sina, the first Taiwanese basketball team to play in China's CBA. It didn't take long for Lo, a sharpshooting guard, and floor general Chou to be recognized by Chinese fans.

Sina returned to Taiwan after two years and joined the SBL. It changed its name to YMY, Azio Eagles folowing a number of ownership changes and is now known as Pure Youth.

The backcourt tandem also made great contribution for Taiwan internationally. They led Taiwan to an East Asian game gold in 1997 in Busan, South Korea, and played together in numerous international competitions, including the Jones Cups, Asian Games and Asian Championships.

As a collegiate player, Lo helped Taiwan beat South Korea with a 38-point outburst in 1993 to secure a ticket to Under-22 Men's World Championship in the same year. Lo earned his nickname "Wonder Boy" by scoring one point per minute throughout his junior high career.

Chou played for ETSN Antelopes before joining Tawan Beer and Lo also signed with TB after being released by his former team Azio, which decided to go with a youth movement.

Hsu Chih-chang wins first BOW award

(Source: ESPN Taiwan)

BOT forward Hsu Chih-chang, who is enjoy a breakout season, won Week 14 Baller of the Week with a weekly averages of 28 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.

BOT has been ranking in the bottom of the standings all season. The only bright side is probably the emergence of Hsu and Chen Shun-hsiang. The problem now is whether Hsu and Chen will don new uniforms last season because, in the past, all good BOT players left the team for higher salaries.

Ouyang Ching-heng (Source: ESPN Taiwan)

Both Sunday games went down to the wire.

Ouyang Ching-heng made two free-throws to clinch the win for dmedia after BOT's Lin Chun-feng's three with 1.9 seconds to go cut the deficit to two.

Ho Shou-cheng, who had 26 points and 7 rebounds, put back a basket with 7.2 seconds left as Taiwan Beer edged Dacin and won its third straight game.

Chen scored season-high, Sanders pulled aside

Chen Hsin-an (Source: ESPN Taiwan)

With the scoring title on the line, Yulon let Chen Hsin-an do his thing while dmedia pulled Jon Sanders aside for some stupid reason.

Current scoring leader Chen Hsin-an scored his season-high 38 points Friday against Pure Youth, boosting his chance of winning the regular season honor.

In the dmedia-TB game, however, dmedia head coach Wu Chien-kuo opted to play Jon Sanders for only 24 minutes, saying that he didn't want to let Taiwan Beer, which is expected to be Numen's opponent in the first round playoff, scout their game.

Sanders, who will finish as the rebounding and assists leader easily, ended up scoring only 9 points. It was not surprising that Sanders was not a happy man after the game.

Personally, I was stunned at Wu's post game remarks, in which he said that his decision and Sanders' discontent came from "different philosophies of the East and the West."

Well, it's a regular season game that did not affect the postseason matchup. Dmedia will meet Taiwan Beer anyway. And Sanders might very well be the first player in SBL history to top three major statistic categories -- scoring, rebounding and assists. I believe it's going to be sort of like Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point record that will never be broken. So why not let him go for the record?

Preventing opponents from scouting? Are you kidding me? These players meet year round. Every game was on TV. Some of the players on both teams are college teammates and former teammates. And that game was the fifth meeting of both sides. Preventing opponents from scouting?

I always have a hard time figuring out some of Taiwanese basketball coaches...

TPEC's 155-game win streak snapped

TSU forward Pan Jia-hui (photo souce: UBA)

Talk about March Madness!

Taiwan Sports University (TSU), formerly known as National Taiwan College of Physical Education (NTCPE), shocked perennial power Taipei Physical Education College (TPEC) 87-76 Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 University Basketball Alliance (UBA) season, snapping TPEC's 155-game winning streak.

The winning streak, which spanned 13 years, was the longest in Taiwanese basketball history at any level. TPEC has won 12 straight UBA titles in those years.

Senior Hsieh Tsun-fu made 10 consecutive free-throws in the final 1:25 to secure the historical win for TSU, the same school that had handed TPEC its last defeat in March 1996.

TSU head coach Mai Tsai-cheng, the school's head coach in the last 13 years, said the upset victory was the biggest win in TSU basketball history. TPEC head coach Chen Chung-cheng, who also coached at the school in 1996, lamented the loss but said it was a good thing the pressure was finally released.

It was not easy for any school to beat TPEC, which could almost get any high school player it wanted becausee of its location (Taipei City) and basketball tradition. Mai joked that TSU could only "get players other schools don't bother taking a look."

Which was why beating TPEC has been always a motivation for most college players in Taiwan. And that showed on Tuesday. Hsieh scored 10 of his 16 points in the final two minutes. Pan Jia-hui had 24 points. Chen Pan-tse had 19. Wang Chi-yuan tallied 19 points and 15 boards. Chen Kuo-wei collcted 10 points and 9 rebounds.

None of these players is on SBL team roster but they all played the game of their lives.

Ironically, Taiwan Beer starting point guard Chen Shih-nian had his first career triple-double -- 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists -- in TPEC's shocking defeat. Yulon starter Lu Cheng-ju had 28 points. Taiwan Mobile forward Hsu Wei-cheng had 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Technically, the loss would not cost TPEC anything though. The quarterfinal round adopts a round robin format, meaning TPEC is still capable of winning its 13th straight title.
