Umm…once again I have to clear things up. Since I have a day job, I will not be able to update the latest game results and recaps in time although I will be trying my very best to do so. And as you all know, the Jones Cup official website sucks. It neither provides live scoring and results update nor presents anything in English.

Jones Cup - pre-tournament notes

-- Japan center Kosuke Takeuchi (205cm) withdrew from the team and as replaced by Kosuke Kanamaru (190cm, 1989, Meiji University), the leading scorer in the World University Games in Belgrade, which just concluded earlier this month.

-- Three Kazakhstan players will miss the Jones Cup due to injury, including star forward Anton Ponomarev, Yegor Biryulin and Alexandr Zhigulin.

-- Taiwan NT and Taiwan Second NT both made yet another roster changes. Dacin's SBL MVP Chang Chih-feng returned from injury and replaced Chou Shih-yuan, who left Taiwan NT after his father was killed in an accident.

As for the second NT, KKL forward Cheng Jen-wei and Taiwan Beer forward Wang Chien-wei replaced a pair of Taiwan Mobile players Yen Cheng-hong and Hsu Wei-sheng.

Taiwan unveils preliminary roster for FIBA Women's Championship

CTBA on Friday announced a preliminary 16-man roster for the 2009 FIBA Women's Championship which will be held in India in August.

The team is a mix of young and old and based on the World University NT with seven players coming from the squad. The coaching staff is also kept intact, including head coach Hung Ling-yao, assistant coaches Teng Pi-yun and Chien Wei-chuan.

Training camp will start on July 22 before a final roster adjustment being made on August 22 for the championship.

Korea wins 2009 Jones Cup women's competition

Korea's Shinhan Bank S-Birds manhandled Taiwan 67-48 Thursday night to win the 2009 Jones Cup women's competition champion, finishing the tournament 5-0.

Shinhan Bank was obviously a better team with a core of Ha Eun-joo and Jung Sun-min. Ha had 12 points and 8 rebounds in 14 minutes while Jung had a team-high 16 points as Korea pulled the game away early. Lee Youn-hoa also had 10 points.

Taiwan was led by Lee Wan-ting, who scored 14 on 7-of-9 shooting, but was hurt by 19 turnovers.

Japan beat Malaysia 85-40 to finish for third-place in the four-team tournament.

Jones Cup women - Taiwan to meet Korea for gold

Taiwan gets a sweet revenge in beating Japan 70-58 in the semifinal Wednesday and is scheduled to meet Korea's Shinhan Bank for women's gold of the 2009 William Jones Cup tournament.

Taiwan lost to Japan by one in the preliminary round after missing a pair of crucial free-throws with six seconds left. Before the rematch, Taiwan assistant coach Wang Ling vowed to beat Japan by 15 points.

In the first meeting Taiwan was left with only seven players due to injury. Five players were added from the World University NT to the roster Wednesday night.

Veteran center Cheng Hui-yun was the key man tonight. She played through injury and had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in less than 19 minutes.

Lee Wan-ting and Lin Chi-wen paced Taiwan with 12 points apiece. Lan Jui-yu had 11. Taiwan led 39-22 at halftime and led by as many as 20 points in the second half before Japan closed the gap.

Yoshie Sakurada had 22 points and Ryoko Utsumi had 20 for Japan.

Korea beat Malaysia 84-65 to stay undefeated in the tournament. Kim Youn-joo scored a team-high 14 points, including three threes, to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Teo Woon-yuen led Malaysia with 14 points and R. Kalamathi had 13 and 8.

Jones Cup women - Missed free-throws cost Taiwan dearly

Ma Yi-hung missed two free-throws with 6.4 seconds to go as Taiwan lost a 61-60 heartbreaker to Japan Monday while Korea routed Malaysia 107-54 to go 2-0 in the four-team tournament.

Taiwan and Japan engaged in a seesaw battle all game long as expected. Chen Yi-feng's three-pointer with 83 seconds to go put Taiwan back on top 60-59 before Japan made the last push.

Yoshie Sakurada put Japan back on top on a fastbreak layup with 15.1 seconds remaining.

Ma Yi-hung, who twisted her right ankle one day before the tournament, was fouled on Taiwan's last possession and had the chance to decide the outcome. However, she missed them both as Japan pulled down the last rebound.

Sakurada led Japan with 18 point while Ryoko Utsumi had 16.

Taiwan was led by Liu Chun-yi's 23 points. Lin Hui-mei, who recorded the first triple-double in Jones Cup women's competition history last night, failed to score on 0-of-8 shooting.

Veteran center Cheng Hui-yun had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Two-time WKBL champion Shinhan Bank had no problem handling Malaysia. Shinhan Bank had five players scoring in double-digit, headed by 19-year-old Kim Dan-bi's 19.

R. Kalamathi scored a team-high 17 points for Malaysia.

Jones Cup Women - Taiwan, Korea win openers

Taiwan routed Malaysia and Korea escaped 79-74 against Japan in the opening day of the 2009 William Jones Cup tournament women's competition.

Taiwan forward Lin Hui-mei tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to record the first triple-double in Jones Cup women's competition in 31 years.

Led by veteran Jung Sun-min, who had 23 points, 8 boards and 7 assists, Korea shook off Japan in the final quarter with a five-point win. Ryoko Utsumi led Japan with 19 points.
